The
Church "Notre Dame de l'Assomption" : Architecture
The place around the church is called the "Place of the Cloister". The canons used to live in the houses (progressively rebuilt over the centuries) to the North and to the East sides of the church.
The church, listed since 1854, is a massive building with a straightforward plan. It is cross-shaped with two large towers at the front (South side) and two chapels attached to the choir (North side). The left hand side choir chapel leads to the sacristy, which was formerly used as a chapter house. The church was built with hewn stones from the near-by town of Vernon. As no whitewash was applied on the stones, in particular outside, the signing marks of the stone cutters (which they used to prove their work and get paid) are still visible and are a moving tribute to these anonymous craftsmen.
The collegiate nature of the church explains its measurements: the choir (20.90 metres) is longer than the nave (15.65 metres) and the transept is very wide (10.40 metres). Originally wood-panelled, the 18 meter-high nave vault was refurbished with bricks in 1768. The two side chapels have kept their wood panelling.
The chapel you encounter to your right hand side when you enter the church was built in 1528 for the parish. It stands out from the rest of the church by its carved vault, which includes many features of the flamboyant Gothic style.
